Ear wax blockage affects about 6% of the population and is one of the most common ear problems doctors see. Ear wax (Cerumen) is an amalgamation of substances, predominantly waxy oils and dead skin cells (Keratinocytes).
It also contains traces of sebum in the mix, along with other substances such as squalene, cholesterol and triglyceride.
It is a by-product of the thousands of Ceruminous glands (specialised sweat glands) which lie under the skin of the ear canal, and drain into the guard hairs lining the ear canal. Though ear wax does possess some protective properties, excess or compacted wax can occlude the ear canal and press against the ear drum, which may cause discomfort and impair hearing.
If You Wear Hearing Aids
If you wear hearing aids, to prevent oil and wax from blocking up your hearing aids just apply the Earol at night, and then wipe out the entrance of your ear canal with a tissue in the morning before you put your hearing aids in. You’ll ideally need to use Earol for five to eight days before your microsuction appointment.
Small amounts of wax in the ear canals are normal and keep the ear healthy. Large build ups of ear wax can cause the ears to become blocked.
Common symptoms of excessive wax include; pain, feeling of fullness, itching, ringing and partial/complete hearing loss.
Ear wax should always be removed by a professional to avoid long term damage to the ear. Home attempts almost always have a negative effect by pushing ear wax further in the canal and making it more impacted – making it more difficult to remove.
Microsuction Ear Wax Removal
Ear wax removal by Microsuction is the safest most effective method for the removal of ear wax from ear canals. Due to the nature of the suction, ear wax can be removed from the ear, irrespective of whether it is soft or hard. This differs from other methods such as syringing and water irrigation where wax has to be treated beforehand with drops to encourage a softer consistency
